Is this your current food storage strategy? It’s ok, you’re not alone and I can help. Whether you’re using plastic containers, glass, Tupperware, or some combination thereof, the key to avoiding this disaster is simple.
Boundaries
Find one drawer or one shelf and label it ‘Food Storage Containers.’ Most homes own too many food storage containers and none of them have lids.
Declutter First. Organize Second.
- Recycle stained or damaged containers
- Match all the containers and lids
- Keep one shape and one brand of plastic (i.e. Ziploc or Glad. Square or Round)
- Organize remaining containers and lids in nested piles
- Respect the boundary you chose and minimize accordingly
- Set aside extra containers to organize your pantry
- Recycle unmatched lids
This drawer serves as the boundary for my containers and they stack easily. I usually avoid plastic, but it serves a purpose so we purchase sparingly and reuse it many times. As I move away from plastic containers, I have tried a few brands to figure out what works best. Below are the reviews.
Best Lunch Box Containers
The Rubbermaid LunchBlox Sandwich Kit, Green is awesome. It’s plastic but durable and long-lasting. We’ve used the same set for over 5 years. I like it so much, I bought two so I can pre-pack snacks and fruit. Also, the single color makes it easier for my son to identify his items at a crowded lunch table. Thus, increasing the chances it returns home.
Pros:
- Perfect size for a small lunch bag
- Secure lid to prevent leaking
- Blue Ice freezer packs snap directly to food containers
- Nest together for easy storage
- Microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe, BPA free
Cons:
- One lid cracked and is no longer secure for liquids.
- We pack soups and liquids in this thermos
Best Glass Food Storage Containers
The Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids Glass Food Storage set is my favorite. But it seems to be discontinued. I have used this Pyrex set which is comparable and has the same pros and cons. If the glass Rubbermaid breaks, I’ll replace it with these. It’s a little heavy for kid’s lunches but my husband carries them. This set meets all our food storage needs. It travels well in a cooler and got us away from disposable plastic containers.
Pros:
- Nests easily with other containers for compact storage
- Tempered glass bases are oven-safe up to 425°F
- Microwave-safe bases, freezer safe, dishwasher-safe bases.
- Top-rack dishwasher-safe lids, all BPA-free
Cons:
- They seal really well and can be difficult to open causing minor spills.
Best Glass for Soups and Sauces
I have two OXO Good Grips 8 Cup Smart Seal Leakproof Glass Rectangle Food Storage Containers which are great for soups and sauces. They seal well and are easy to open without making a mess.
Pros:
- Four locking tabs secure the foolproof, leakproof lids
- Durable and designed to go from freezer to oven
- Smart Seal glass containers nest and stack for convenient and compact storage
- Removable silicone seal is easy to clean
- Oven, microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe
Cons:
- The locking lids can be difficult to close
- Don’t stack as nicely as others
