Our bedroom is a clean and uncluttered space that we enjoy coming home to each night. It’s a place of rest, a sanctuary. The master bedroom is minimalist and peaceful.
Each night, we close the armoire doors which hold electronics. In future months, we plan to remove the TV and armoire completely because we know that blue light interrupts our circadian rhythms. And bedrooms are meant for just two things, neither of which involve screens.
Clutter and Sleep Quality
You might discount the importance I place on the the state of our bedroom, but studies show that decluttering your bedroom leads to better quality sleep. One article states that “If you’ve ever gone to bed feeling a little guilty about the condition of your bedroom, there’s a good chance that the mess interfered with your sleep.”
In addition, our bed is really comfortable so I sink into it with gratitude after a long day. I look forward to crawling into bed early to read and relax. Remember my rules for happiness? Health, rest and exercise are no longer optional parts of my day. The quality of my sleep is tied to how relaxed I feel in the room. Our uncluttered, minimalist bedroom makes all the difference.
For today’s challenge, let’s declutter your bedroom with just a few easy steps. You will enjoy a more restful night’s sleep.
Decluttering Challenge Day 26
- Make the Bed – Everyday! This task alone creates a tidy feel. It also creates a clean surface for folding laundry or packing for a trip. I have been making the bed my entire life and never found it delayed me getting out the door.
- Put Away Clean Laundry – Hang clean clothes in the closet and fold them neatly in dresser drawers. Completely close the doors and drawers each night.
- Use a Hamper or Laundry Basket – Yes, I even organize my dirty laundry. 🙂 Actually, I just collect it in one place. Tucked away in a laundry hamper instead of draped across the furniture or scattered on the floor.
- Empty Nightstand – No phone and no bright alarm clock. I do have a small reading lamp, glass of water and travel alarm clock. I keep a notepad, pen and Kindle inside the drawer but that’s it.
- Minimal Decorations – The space isn’t just easier to clean, it’s calming to see empty surfaces.
- Black Out Blinds – A few years ago, we invested in room darkening blinds to help us sleep. Blinds that easily push up in the morning and pull down at night. They are simple to clean unlike dust-collecting curtains.
- Starting Tomorrow Morning – Make your bed, gather the dirty laundry and put away the clean laundry. For extra credit, change the sheets. Grab an empty box and clean sweep just your bedroom. Remove anything that doesn’t belong and return it to it’s proper home. Use the examples above as your guide.
- Lie Down on your Bed….look around. What comes to mind? Hopefully, peaceful and restful thoughts.
Now, imagine how much better you’ll sleep tonight.
