Landing Spot
It’s Day 2 of the Decluttering and Downsizing Challenge! Today, I’m going to recommend some tips for getting out the door quickly and easily. These tricks help me feel more organized and start the day off on the right foot! But first, we’ll declutter that space and create some best practices. One of my favorites and most effective is the landing spot.
Did you know?
- In our lifetime, we will spend a total of 3,680 hours or 153 days searching for misplaced items.
- We lose up to 9 items every day—or 198,743 in a lifetime. (The Daily Mail)
If the challenge feels too slow, keep in mind that you did not accumulate all this clutter overnight. So, it will take time to get rid of it and new habits to keep it away! Stick with me this month and you’ll get there! The Simply Enough Challenge is about more than helping you to declutter and organize your home. It’s about challenging you to live differently. Living with less but having more.
I didn’t call this an “organizing challenge’ for a reason.” By reducing the number of items you own, organization will follow.
Decluttering and Downsizing Day 2
Tackle 3 common/daily-use areas. Check out the video tour of my space as well.
- Car/Trunk – Grab a trash bag or two and clean out the car. Unload all the stuff that does not belong and return it to it’s proper home. Don’t worry about vacuuming up Cheerios. We just need empty space for all the stuff you’re donating. Remember that Donation Box I told you about yesterday? By the end of the month, I hope your car has made several trips to a local donation center. When you’re done emptying the car, take it out for a test drive. How do you feel with the clutter gone?
- Purse/Briefcase/Work Bag/Diaper Bag – Go through one or all of these and make sure you’re carrying only what you need every day. Find a home or a hook for them near the door that you use to exit your home. Toss the extra unused items that have set up residence in these bags.
- Landing Spot – Designate a table or basket for your wallet, keys, phone and sunglasses near the door you use to exit the house. Don’t try to change your muscle memory and use a different door. This rarely works.
What clutter did you find in these places? How many donation boxes are filled? Perhaps a full trash can too?
Extra Credit
Still want to do more? Great! For extra credit, tackle the Coat Closet:
- Take everything out of the coat closet
- Try on coats, match gloves, hats, scarves etc
- Make sure that everyone in the family is well clothed
- Donate the extras to someone in need.
With temperatures dropping in the mid-Atlantic, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to have several coats to choose from while others have none. If you’re in Northern Virginia – HERE is a charity for winter clothing. They distribute clothing and food to local families in need.
Let me know what cluttered spaces are weighing you down? I’ll be sure to include them in the challenge.
