Yes, I’m still talking about your clothing closet. This space can be a big project when trying to get organized. So far, we’ve discussed accessories, laundry, hangers and now colors. To that end, you should be picking up on the fact that my system for downsizing involves streamlining color choices.
Have you ever purchased a comfortable shirt in your favorite color? And then bought another one in a different color because they were on sale? Only to see the second one hang in your closet unworn? But it was so comfortable in the store! And it was a great deal, right?! Worry not, you are not alone. I did this more times than I can count, thinking I would wear both colors equally. I did not.
What I’ve also learned about color choices is that I know myself. I know what I like and what I don’t. Owning two high quality black t-shirts, two gray sweaters and three dresses in gray-black tones are wise investments. I wear these all the time.
Before you start start pointing out that black and gray are boring, know that I wear more than just neutral colors. Various shades of purple, navy, lime green and red are some of my favorites.
By knowing your favorites, you can own 4 purple shirts and 5 navy sweatshirts as I do. My two pairs of jeans are high quality and comfortable. As are the 12 pairs of shoes I own. (I think this number is too high…I’m going to work on that.)
Decluttering Challenge Day 18
- Duplicates – Yesterday, we organized the closet by color. Count the number of duplicate items you have. I.e. Jeans, black pants, sweaters, leggings etc. Keep your favorite black pants and donate the rest. Downsize sweaters based on color.
- High Quality Basics – While five pairs of black pants might be overkill, multiple good quality shirts in neutral colors like black, gray and white can serve as the foundation of a great capsule wardrobe.
- One-Off Colors – You will no longer find pink, yellow, orange or most greens in my wardrobe. Remove colors you do not like and the accessories too.
Check back tomorrow for one more post about clothing closets.
