For starters, I need to thank Erin Doland of Unclutterer for introducing me to Evernote about 10 years ago. It took a little trial and error to fully adopt, but during that time Evernote introduced a mobile app. While I use the desktop version a lot, I love that the information is always with me. The addition of the Web Clipper changed everything because I can clip webpages and save them to meaningful notebooks such as Recipes, Travel, Family etc.
After a few months use, it’s easy to see which Notebooks really help me stay organized. I especially love Evernote for Recipe Organization because I can save many formats in one Notebook. Here’s how my Recipe System works and what I like.
- Take pictures of recipe cards written by my grandma – (The entire family can have cards in her original hand-writing. Hold onto the memories, not the paper.)
- Write an original recipe in a Note – (For creative types, like my husband, who invent and change recipes.)
- Scan a magazine article – (No more piles of Food & Wine.)
- Photograph recipes you actually use from a large recipe book. (Donate the book)
- “Clip” a Recipe website (Ditch the numerous log-ons to cooking sites and keep all your favorites in one place.)
- Search based on a keyword like Bread or Chicken
- Share recipes with friends directly from Evernote
Decluttering Challenge Day 13
- Recipe Books – Photograph recipes you love and donate at least 3 recipe books. Establish one shelf to house your recipe books. Use the one in, one out rule.
- Recipe Cards – Go through your cards and loose paper recipes. Throw away recipes you rarely make or do not like. Ensure your cards are sorted by type. Use an app like Evernote to scan remaining cards and consider moving away from any paper systems. That said, don’t recreate the wheel if you have an organized paper system that’s working for you.
- Online Cooking Sites – As you look up recipes, save your favorites to Evernote using the web clipper.
